Foster + Partners Secures Design Contract for King Salman International Airport”

Foster + Partners has signed a partnership agreement to advance the design phase for King Salman International Airport. The agreement, formalized in a recent ceremony in Riyadh, marks a significant step in developing the airport, which aims to enhance Riyadh’s role as a global logistics hub and stimulate transport, trade, and tourism, bridging East and West.

The project will feature a comprehensive urban masterplan designed by a multidisciplinary team led by Foster + Partners. Their scope includes validating the concept masterplan, detailing the masterplan, and designing key assets.

Luke Fox, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We are excited to begin the next stage of the King Salman International Airport project. Our approach will redefine airport design, enhancing the passenger experience and creating a unique airport metropolis that reflects Riyadh’s rich culture.”

King Salman International Airport is poised to become one of the world’s largest airports, spanning approximately 57 km² with six parallel runways and multiple terminals. It is expected to handle up to 100 million travelers by 2030.

The masterplan includes 12 km² of residential and recreational spaces, retail outlets, support facilities, and logistics real estate. Central to the design is the Wadi Loop, a green corridor that integrates the existing wadi with new developments, enhancing connectivity and creating a seamless experience for passengers. The plan also improves public transportation links to the wider city.

The main terminal will reflect Riyadh’s diverse cityscape and incorporate natural elements, offering panoramic views and intuitive navigation. It will feature natural ventilation, climate-controlled lighting, and an efficient internal environment. The design prioritizes passenger flow and incorporates clear wayfinding with minimal level changes.

King Salman International Airport will embody a dynamic aerotropolis model with a focus on seamless customer experiences, efficient operations, and innovative solutions. The design will highlight Saudi culture and Riyadh’s identity, aiming for LEED Platinum certification with advanced green initiatives and renewable energy sources.

Seif A. Bahaa Eldin, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners, noted: “Our masterplan introduces a groundbreaking design that enhances passenger experience and establishes a new gateway for Riyadh.”
