Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) has announced the signing of a contract with RoPower Nuclear for Phase 2 front-end engineering and design (FEED) work on its small modular reactor (SMR) project in Doicesti, Romania. Fluor will recognize this contract as a new award in the third quarter of 2024, following the completion of Phase 1 FEED work in the fourth quarter of 2023.
The project will employ NuScale Power’s SMR technology to produce carbon-free electricity, marking a significant step forward in Romania’s clean energy initiatives.
The contract signing ceremony occurred during the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation summit in Bucharest on July 24. The event was attended by Fluor and NuScale representatives, Romanian Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja, and U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. This gathering highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Romanian and U.S. governments in advancing SMR technology to meet carbon-free power needs and strengthen energy security.
Pierre Bechelany, President of Fluor’s LNG & Power business, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are pleased to continue our role in supporting this important project to deploy the next generation of nuclear power, which will provide clean and reliable baseload electricity for Romania and Europe. This facility will be the first of its kind in Europe once completed.”
Fluor’s Phase 2 FEED work will focus on customizing a six-reactor SMR power plant with NuScale technology, designed to produce up to 462 megawatts according to European codes and standards. Fluor is a major investor in NuScale, the developer of the only SMR technology that has received design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
