First Quantum Minerals has announced plans to commence construction on the $3.5 billion Taca Taca copper project in Salta, Argentina, following discussions with Argentine government authorities, as reported by Rumbo Minero International.
During the Argentina Mining 2024 event, held in the Province of Salta, representatives from the Canadian mining company revealed that work on the Taca Taca project, located 230 km west of Salta city, would soon begin. Taca Taca is a significant copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry deposit at an advanced exploration stage.
In 2013, measured and indicated resources were reported at 9.6 million tonnes of contained copper, with an additional 3.4 million tonnes of inferred resources. First Quantum acquired the project in 2014 through its subsidiary, Corriente Argentina S.A. (CASA).
Set to begin construction in 2025, the project is expected to create numerous direct and indirect jobs, driving socio-economic development in the region. The Salta government also signed an agreement with the Argentine Geological and Mining Service, ensuring scientific and technical support for environmental and social impact assessments and ongoing oversight of the project.
