ExxonMobil has officially greenlit two consortia to commence a front-end engineering and design (FEED) competition for its massive Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique. This strategic move marks a significant step forward in the development of one of the world’s largest natural gas projects. Upon completion of the FEED phase, one of the competing consortia will be awarded the highly coveted contract to construct the 18 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) LNG plant, a key component of the project.
The Rovuma LNG project is centered around the vast deepwater Mamba field located in Mozambique’s offshore Area 4. This field is known for its substantial reserves of natural gas, making it a critical asset in the global energy market. Gas extracted from the Mamba field will be transported to an onshore LNG plant, where it will be processed, liquefied, and prepared for export to international markets.
The project is expected to play a transformative role in Mozambique’s economy, providing significant revenue through exports and fostering local employment opportunities. It also reinforces Mozambique’s position as a major player in the global LNG industry. The consortia involved in the FEED competition are anticipated to bring forward innovative design solutions that will ensure the plant operates with maximum efficiency and reliability, while meeting the stringent environmental and safety standards required for such a large-scale operation.
This phase of the project will be critical in determining the final design and execution strategy, paving the way for the construction of the plant, which will play a crucial role in meeting the world’s growing demand for cleaner energy.
