Germany’s John T. Essberger is set to enhance its chemical tanker fleet with plans for up to six newbuilds in China. The Hamburg-based company has officially contracted two firm units, each with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 13,000 and 1A ice class specifications, from Nantong Rainbow Offshore & Engineering Equipment, along with options for four additional vessels.
While the financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, the new ships, measuring 132 meters in length, will be equipped with engines capable of operating on methanol. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in April 2027.
This latest order follows Essberger’s acquisition of eight stainless steel parcel chemical tankers from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in 2021 and aligns with the company’s centennial celebrations.
“Despite facing global challenges such as limited shipyard capacity and increasing construction costs, we are committed to modernizing and expanding our fleet to meet the highest technical standards,” said an Essberger representative.
Upon completion, the new vessels will join the E&S Tankers Pool, a joint venture between Essberger and Stolt Tankers, further bolstering their operational capabilities in the chemical transportation sector.
