Japanese energy firm Erex will construct a 50MW biomass power plant in Cambodia’s Kampong Speu province, with construction scheduled to begin in June 2025. The project aims to strengthen the region’s energy supply and deliver more affordable electricity to Kampong Speu and neighboring provinces.
The announcement was made during a meeting between Tuy Ri, the Cambodian Ambassador to Japan, and IMAMURA Masahiro, former President of the Cambodia-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Alliance and Advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister. The two sides discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in energy development.
Erex Chairman Hitoshi Honna and company manager Tomoki Kakuta also unveiled plans for a 40MW solar power plant in Pursat province. That project is expected to begin operations in 2026, following approval by the Royal Government of Cambodia earlier this year.
“The 50MW biomass plant will take about two years to complete, with commissioning expected by 2027,” said Honna. “Our goal is to provide affordable energy while also exploring opportunities to expand biomass power generation in other provinces using agricultural residues such as rice husks, straw, and bark.”
