Eni and YPF have signed a Final Technical Project Description (FTPD) to advance the 12 million-ton-per-year Argentina LNG project, marking a major milestone toward a Final Investment Decision (FID) and positioning Argentina as an emerging global LNG exporter.
During a meeting in Buenos Aires, Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and YPF CEO Horacio Marin formalized the agreement, which outlines the technical and commercial framework for developing one of Latin America’s most ambitious gas export initiatives.
The Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) project adopts an integrated approach, covering gas production, processing, transport, and liquefaction. The initial phase will deploy two floating LNG (FLNG) units, each capable of producing 6 million tonnes of LNG per year—equivalent to about 9 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
This agreement follows the Head of Agreement signed by Eni and YPF in June 2025. The partners plan to combine Eni’s expertise in fast-track FLNG projects, proven in Congo and Mozambique, with YPF’s operational experience in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale basin.
The signing ceremony was attended by Argentine President Javier Milei, who has identified energy exports as a key pillar of his economic strategy. The ARGLNG project aims to unlock the vast unconventional gas reserves of Vaca Muerta, transforming Argentina from a regional supplier into a global LNG player. At full capacity, the project could eventually produce up to 30 MTPA of LNG through multiple expansion phases.
For Eni, this partnership aligns with its gas-focused growth and carbon neutrality strategy for 2050. For YPF, it represents a pathway to monetize its shale gas resources, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Argentina’s position in the global energy market.
