Egypt Unveils $17 Billion Plan for 400,000 TPA Green Hydrogen Plant

Egypt has unveiled plans for a $17 billion green hydrogen plant in South Sinai, aimed at positioning the country as a key player in the global hydrogen economy.

The project, listed on the Investment Opportunities Platform of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, is expected to cover 127 square kilometers and produce up to 400,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

A 3.1 GW solar array, supported by pumped hydro storage, will power electrolysers during the day while simultaneously pumping water to a mountain-top reservoir. At night, the stored water will be released to generate electricity, ensuring continuous 24/7 operations.

The development is set to roll out in three phases, with the first phase targeted for completion in 2030, followed by subsequent phases in 2033 and 2035.

Additionally, the project could play a strategic role in hydrogen exports, with potential shipments to Europe via the Suez Canal.
