Dubai Commits $408 Million to Future-Proof Stormwater Infrastructure

In a bold move to strengthen climate resilience, Dubai has awarded contracts worth AED 1.439 billion (USD 408 million) for a series of major stormwater drainage projects. These initiatives fall under the city’s ambitious ‘Tasreef’ program, a long-term strategy to upgrade and unify Dubai’s stormwater infrastructure. Set for completion by 2027, the projects aim to significantly enhance the city’s readiness for extreme weather while laying the foundation for sustainable urban growth.

The investment follows directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, reflecting a national commitment to forward-thinking, resilient infrastructure that supports future needs.

Building a Resilient Network

The latest contracts expand the Tasreef system—Dubai’s largest and most advanced stormwater collection network. Works will focus on several key areas, including Nad Al Hamar, the surroundings of Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa. More than 36 kilometers of new drainage pipelines will be constructed, connecting these districts to the central Tasreef tunnel.

Once completed, the integrated system will improve drainage capacity across the emirate, lower maintenance and operational costs, and deliver better services to both residents and businesses. It’s a major step toward creating a seamless, citywide water management solution that adapts to Dubai’s rapid urban expansion and changing climate conditions.

Engineering the Future

His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted the scale and impact of the initiative, noting its importance for Dubai’s long-term infrastructure goals.

“These projects are designed to expand our stormwater drainage capacity by 700% over the next century,” he said. “They reflect Dubai’s determination to remain at the forefront of global cities when it comes to infrastructure innovation and climate resilience.”

By investing in scalable, future-oriented solutions today, Dubai is positioning itself as a global benchmark for smart urban planning, sustainability, and climate adaptation.
