Denmark’s Simonsen orders eight chemical tankers in China

Danish owner Rederiet MH Simonsen has contracted for eight stainless steel chemical tankers at the reborn Chinese yard, New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding.

The Svendborg-based company will see the 6,800 dwt IMO type II vessels equipped with a methanol dual-fuel system and an independent energy storage unit.

The family-owned business was established nearly a century ago and today owns and operates more than 10 tankers in the European market, ranging from 2.000 dwt to 7.000 dwt.

Financial terms and delivery details for Simonsen’s first newbuilding project in China were not divulged.

The yard in Jiangxi, formerly Jiangzhou Union Shipbuilding, recently marked its return to the European newbuilding market in a deal with Dutch owner Mercurius Shipping for four chemical tankers and six MPPs with Germany’s Candler Schiffahrt.
