CycleØ, a European biogas developer, has announced plans to invest €200 million to build up to 30 biogas plants across Spain, with a combined renewable natural gas (RNG) production capacity of 800 GWh.
The investment will generate enough gas to meet the annual needs of approximately 123,000 households. It will also help bridge the significant gap in Spain’s renewable gas production, which currently falls 75% short of the 10.4 TWh target set in the country’s 2022 biogas roadmap.
CycleØ already operates three biogas plants in Lleida, Catalonia, along with a grid injection point. Its fully owned subsidiary, FNX, is based in Artea, Basque Country, where the company manufactures its biogas upgrading technology.
“We know there is a significant gap in biogas and biomethane generation capacity in Spain, and we are investing now to help fill that gap,” said CycleØ CEO Laurence Molke.
Spain currently has just nine biomethane plants—far behind countries such as France (675), Germany (254), and Italy (133). Across Europe, more than 1,500 biomethane plants are in operation.
As part of its €200 million investment, CycleØ will:
- Develop up to 30 biogas plants, integrating liquefaction technology to convert the gas into biomethane. The plants will range from small to medium-sized facilities.
- Generate RNG from agri-food and industrial waste, upgrading it for injection into the Spanish gas grid or liquefying it for transport applications.
- Establish additional grid injection points to facilitate direct integration of biomethane into Spain’s gas network.
This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening Spain’s renewable energy infrastructure and aligning with European efforts to expand biogas production.
