Crescent Midstream has been selected to lead the development of a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project for Entergy Corporation’s 994 MW Lake Charles Power Station, located in Westlake, Louisiana. This initiative will be one of the largest CCS projects in the U.S., capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions equivalent to those produced by 600,000 vehicles annually.
In partnership with SAMSUNG E&A and utilizing Honeywell’s carbon capture technology, the project aims to construct a facility and pipeline capable of capturing and transporting 3 million metric tonnes of CO2 per year. With a project investment of approximately $1 billion, the captured CO2 will be safely transported for permanent underground storage, helping reduce emissions in the Louisiana Gulf Coast region, one of the highest CO2-emitting areas in the country.
Louisiana ranks as the second-largest CO2-emitting state in the U.S., with much of these emissions concentrated in the lower Mississippi River Industrial Corridor, which produces over 72 million tonnes of CO2 annually. About 66% of these emissions come from industrial sources, while 13% are generated by electric power plants.
Crescent Midstream, with its extensive experience in onshore and offshore pipeline construction, will ensure the safe transportation of CO2 from emission sources to storage facilities.
“Corporate sustainability is a core value at Crescent Midstream. We’re proud to apply our midstream expertise to connect carbon emission sources with permanent storage solutions. Large-scale carbon capture and sequestration offers enormous potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and we’re excited to showcase this in one of the country’s highest emitting regions,” said Jerry Ashcroft, CEO of Crescent Midstream.
This project underscores Crescent’s commitment to corporate sustainability. The company is also involved in efforts to reduce methane emissions by sponsoring the Well Done Foundation’s work to plug orphaned oil wells in Louisiana, as well as marsh preservation projects that combat coastal erosion. Crescent also actively supports community outreach and organizations in Southern Louisiana.
Crescent Midstream is backed by The Carlyle Group, a leading global alternative investment firm with $435 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2024.
