Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the construction of a new $573 million Terrell State Hospital, designed to provide inpatient psychiatric care for residents of North Texas.
The new 415,000-square-foot hospital will feature 275 beds, with 175 designated for non-maximum security, 50 for maximum security, and 50 for adolescent care. According to an official statement from Abbott’s office, the facility will have separate living areas for adult and adolescent patients, while the maximum-security unit will be equipped with stringent safety measures to protect patients, staff, and the community.
Governor Abbott highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “This groundbreaking for the new state hospital in Terrell marks a significant advancement in Texas’ efforts to expand and modernize state facilities for behavioral health treatment. Since 2017, Texas has allocated over $2.5 billion to build, renovate, and improve our state hospitals, ensuring that Texans across the state have access to the quality inpatient psychiatric care they need and deserve.”
