The construction of a 10,800 CEU car carrier, jointly developed by GSI and the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, commenced on February 12 with a groundbreaking ceremony. The vessel features LNG dual-fuel propulsion and is designed to be ammonia- and methanol-ready, ensuring compatibility with future clean energy solutions. It is also equipped with integrated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology, meeting the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards.
HMM placed an order for up to ten 10,800 CEU LNG dual-fuel car carriers at the Chinese shipyard in late 2023. The vessels were ordered as part of a long-term charter agreement with South Korean logistics company Hyundai Glovis.
GSI has reported receiving nearly 40 orders for car carriers and has so far built and delivered 13 of these vessels. In May 2024, Hyundai Glovis booked an additional six 10,800 CEU LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) at GSI, reinforcing the growing dominance of Chinese shipyards in securing the majority of new global car carrier orders.
