Conrad Shipyard and Samsung Heavy Industries Partner on U.S. LNG Bunkering Projects

Conrad Shipyard, LLC, based in Morgan City, Louisiana, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to explore opportunities in the growing U.S. LNG bunkering market. This collaboration combines Conrad’s domestic shipbuilding experience with SHI’s global expertise in advanced LNG technologies.

Conrad Shipyard made history in 2018 by delivering North America’s first LNG bunkering barge, and this MOU aims to expand their leadership in the sector. The partnership will evaluate and pursue technical, commercial, and market-based initiatives to design, construct, and deploy LNG vessels that meet U.S. regulatory and operational requirements.

Strategic Collaboration for Advanced LNG Vessels
SHI representatives emphasized that the collaboration will not only help the companies enter the U.S. LNG market but also contribute to the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry.

Johnny Conrad, Executive Chairman of Conrad Shipyard, stated: “We are honored to collaborate with Samsung Heavy Industries. This MOU reflects Conrad’s commitment to innovation in the U.S. maritime sector and positions both companies to develop advanced LNG bunkering vessels tailored to market demand.”

Leveraging Combined Expertise
Conrad Shipyard brings extensive experience in navigating regulatory requirements for LNG bunkering vessels, including design, engineering, and construction. By combining this knowledge with SHI’s state-of-the-art LNG technology, the partnership is well-positioned to advance LNG bunkering solutions in the U.S., meeting the industry’s increasing demand for cleaner and more efficient marine fuel options.

This strategic MOU highlights the growing focus on sustainable maritime solutions, supporting the transition to LNG as a lower-emission alternative in U.S. shipping and fostering innovation in domestic shipbuilding.
