Hygreen Energy has announced plans to invest up to €2 billion ($2.2 billion) in a green hydrogen production project in Spain’s Andalusian region. As part of the deal, the Chinese electrolyser manufacturer will also establish manufacturing and technology development operations in the area, in collaboration with the Spanish company Coxabengoa.
Coxabengoa is set to develop two key hydrogen projects: a component manufacturing facility in Málaga and a green hydrogen production site in Huelva. These projects will benefit from Hygreen’s substantial investment. Juanma Moreno, President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “This is a key commitment to Andalusia and an important step in a strategic sector.”
Andalusia aims to become a European leader in green hydrogen, leveraging its abundant wind and solar resources. Over the past four years, the region has managed to double its clean energy production capacity, thanks to a combination of solar and wind power.
Moreno further elaborated, “Andalusia has the capacity and must lead in green hydrogen within Europe. This should be a collective ambition shared by the productive sector, businesses, public administration, and society as a whole.”
With a current manufacturing capacity of 2GW, Hygreen views Coxabengoa as a “strategic partner” for expanding its presence in the European market, particularly across various renewable energy sectors. Javier Romero, Board Director at Hygreen, stated that the partnership will “significantly advance the hydrogen economy across Europe.” He added, “By leveraging both companies’ strengths, we aim to advance electrolyser technology, expedite market adoption, and capitalize on the rapid growth of green hydrogen.”
In a recent interview with H2 View, Ethan Hugh, Global Marketing Director of Hygreen, predicted that demand for electrolysers outside of China will surpass domestic demand by 2025. He noted, “Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australia have introduced policies and incentives, which come with strict timelines. As a result, projects are accelerating and exploring various supply options, driving global demand.”
To date, Hygreen has delivered over 300 electrolyser systems across five continents, serving industries including power, energy storage, and mobility. Hugh mentioned that future projects will likely explore diverse global supply options.
