Chevron has announced its proposal for the Gorgon gas development backfill fields offshore Australia, inviting public feedback. The plan involves integrating seven backfill fields into the existing subsea infrastructure that connects the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields with the Gorgon Gas Facility.
The development will occur in stages, with the seven fields—Chandon, Chrysaor, Dionysus, Eurytion, Geryon, Semele, and West Tryal Rocks—being developed sequentially rather than all at once.
Located approximately 200 kilometers north of Onslow and 100 kilometers north-northeast of Barrow Island, the fields are situated in water depths ranging from 150 meters to 1,400 meters. They are spread across multiple exploration areas, including WA-5-R, WA-14-R, WA-15-R, WA-20-R, WA-21-R, WA-22-R, WA-53-R, WA-75-R, and WA-76-R.
Chevron anticipates beginning development activities for the first field in 2026. Although the order of development has not yet been finalized, Geryon and Eurytion are currently designated as the next fields to be developed, with plans for co-development using shared infrastructure.
Backfill fields are crucial for maintaining the gas supply necessary to keep the existing facility operating efficiently.
The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) has confirmed that the proposal meets initial regulatory requirements for public comment. However, the acceptability of the project and its environmental impacts will only be assessed after the public consultation period concludes and Chevron addresses any issues raised.
If the proposal meets all regulatory standards and receives NOPSEMA’s approval, further permits, including environmental plans, safety cases, and well operations management plans, will be required before any development can commence.
