Chevron Australia and the Gorgon Joint Venture Participants have given the green light to the Gorgon Stage 3 LNG development off the northwest coast of Western Australia, following a final investment decision (FID).
The A$3 billion backfill project will link the offshore Geryon and Eurytion gas fields in the Greater Gorgon Area to Gorgon’s existing subsea gas gathering and processing infrastructure on Barrow Island. The development is designed to maintain Gorgon’s production levels, ensuring the long-term supply of domestic gas for regional industries and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for international customers, particularly in Asia.
“Gorgon is a world-class energy asset that supports economic development and energy security across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region,” said Chevron Australia President Balaji Krishnamurthy. “By developing the Geryon and Eurytion fields alongside the existing Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields, we can continue delivering reliable energy to meet global demand.”
Gorgon Stage 3 will involve installing three manifolds, a 35km production flowline, and drilling six wells in water depths of approximately 1,300 metres. The project is a cost-competitive initiative that optimises existing infrastructure and complements the Jansz-Io Compression Project and the completed Stage 2 infill development.
The Chevron-operated Gorgon Project, a joint venture with ExxonMobil, Shell, Osaka Gas, MidOcean, and JERA, currently produces up to 300 terajoules per day for the regional market and 15.6 million tonnes of LNG annually. It also includes the world’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative, which captured 1.33 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2024-25, a fraction of total plant emissions.
This Stage 3 development reinforces Gorgon’s strategic role in securing energy supplies and supporting industrial growth in Australia and across Asia.
