Catalonia will allocate 46 million for the development of biogas plants

The Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia has approved an investment of 23 million euros by 2024 with the aim of promoting biogas plants.  The objective is to valorize livestock manure and organic waste to obtain biogas and use it for the generation of heat, electricity or biomethane, and biofertilizers.

The line of subsidies, promoted by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, is part of the Catalan Biogas Strategy of Catalonia 2023-2030 . This plan aims to multiply the current production of biogas by 3.5 and reach more than 150 plants in 2030, reduce the emission of 350,000 tons of CO₂ each year and promote the management of livestock manure.

The Government Agreement also includes an investment of 20 million in 2025 and another 3 million in 2026 to promote these biogas plant facilities and the treatment and storage of organic material obtained as a result of anaerobic digestion (digested) and, in turn , facilitate connections to the distribution network.

Catalonia is one of the European regions with the greatest availability of resources and, in this sense, biogas is a great opportunity for the territory, both economically, energetically and environmentally. Currently, there are 72 plants in operation, including landfills, sewage sludge treatments, municipal and industrial organic waste, co-digestion and livestock manure.

Biogas plants can offer energy in the environment in which they are installed and take advantage of the local potential for generating renewable energy with energy efficiency criteria. Only in the field of manure treatment, the Catalan Biogas Strategy will encourage a tenfold increase in the waste treated each year until reaching 4 million tons of slurry, manure and chicken manure.
