Energy giants BP and Iberdrola have commenced construction on Spain’s largest green hydrogen plant in Valencia.
The €70 million facility will occupy a 20,000-square-meter site adjacent to BP’s Castellón refinery, utilizing renewable electricity from Iberdrola’s solar and wind farms to produce hydrogen.
Scheduled for completion in 2026, the plant will generate 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, reducing emissions equivalent to those produced by 5,000 cars. The hydrogen will replace grey hydrogen—currently derived from natural gas—at the refinery, significantly cutting its carbon footprint.
Future phases of the project may see the hydrogen utilized in hard-to-decarbonize industries, such as ceramics.
Carolina Mesa, Vice President of BP, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “The start of construction of the largest green hydrogen plant in Spain is great news. It allows us to see tangible progress in an important industrial decarbonization project.”
Jorge Palomar Herrero, Iberdrola’s Director of Hydrogen Development, underscored its local economic impact, noting, “This project is already enabling the development of a hydrogen value chain in our country, with key equipment made in Spain and providing work for more than 25 local companies.”
