Türkiye Discovers 75 bcm Natural Gas Reserve in Black Sea
Türkiye has made a major breakthrough with the discovery of a 75 billion cubic meter natural gas reserve in the Black Sea, marking a pivotal step toward energy independence. The new reserve, announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is located at the Göktepe-3 well and was drilled using the country’s seventh-generation drilling ship, Abdulhamid Han.
The discovery is expected to supply residential gas demand for approximately 3.5 years, with an estimated economic value of $30 billion. The reserve will be developed as part of the Sakarya Gas Field Project, utilizing a floating production platform.
President Erdoğan confirmed that the first phase of Black Sea production is already underway, currently delivering 9.5 million cubic meters of gas daily, enough to serve around four million households. He also announced plans to double production by 2026 and quadruple it by 2028, citing ongoing expansion of the country’s energy fleet and partnerships.
Türkiye is diversifying its energy sources across the board, with significant investments in nuclear, hydro, wind, geothermal, solar, and oil and gas. The country’s survey and drilling ships have also been active internationally, including in Somalia, where Türkiye is exploring three offshore blocks totaling 5,000 km².
Erdoğan called the Sakarya discovery a “turning point” for Türkiye, highlighting the broader goal of unlocking the country’s full energy potential.
