The Port Arthur project’s Phase 2 received authorization from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in September 2023. This phase includes provisions for pre-final investment decision work to ensure project cost and schedule certainty.
The project will feature two liquefaction trains capable of producing approximately 13 million tons per annum of liquefied natural gas (LNG), effectively doubling the facility’s total liquefaction capacity to 26 million tons per annum.
Phase 1, currently under construction, includes trains 1 and 2, two LNG storage tanks, and associated facilities. Sempra anticipates that trains 1 and 2 will commence commercial operations in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
“Building on the success of Port Arthur LNG Phase 1, which is currently under construction, the Phase 2 project is expected to further enhance the supply of secure, abundant, and reliable U.S. natural gas to customers around the globe,” said Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure.
Port Arthur is recognized as an energy hub by the federal government. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has selected Flatiron, based in Broomfield, Colorado, to construct $102 million in surge protection upgrades to three pump stations in the region, safeguarding them against extreme weather and rising sea levels.
