Spanish energy company Avalon Renovables has announced plans to invest approximately €8 billion in green hydrogen and derivatives projects across multiple locations in Spain, including Jaén, Huelva, Cádiz, and Málaga.
The investment will fund the construction of renewable energy generation plants, green hydrogen production facilities, and derivative plants for green ammonia, e-methanol, e-SAF, and biogas. Additionally, the project includes developing infrastructure for transportation, storage, and distribution of these sustainable fuels to designated delivery points.
Avalon plans to roll out this investment over five years, creating an estimated 10,000 direct jobs throughout all project phases, from planning and engineering to construction and operations. The company expects to launch initial e-methanol and e-SAF production phases by mid-2028.
Currently, Avalon holds a project portfolio exceeding 3.5 GW in Spain. Among its key initiatives is the Algeciras and Cádiz Bays project, a major undertaking for Andalusia. This project will establish a dedicated hydroduct to transport green hydrogen, enabling the production of 750,000 tons of green ammonia, nearly 350,000 tons of e-methanol, and 130,000 tons of e-SAF annually.
Huelva is also a strategic hub for Avalon, where it plans to build a plant capable of producing 350,000 tons of e-methanol per year near the Bay of Huelva. Meanwhile, in Jaén, the company is developing the Martos biofuel plant, a €100 million investment expected to generate over 200 jobs during construction and 40 specialized roles once operational by the end of 2027.
In Málaga, Avalon is working on a project designed to produce 30,000 tons of e-SAF annually.
The company officially announced its investment plans during the second edition of the Green Hydrogen Congress in Huelva, where it also shared its strategic roadmap and industry vision with other stakeholders.
