Sizewell C has awarded Arabelle Solutions a contract to supply and install two complete turbine islands for the planned Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk, UK. The EDF subsidiary is already supplying turbines for the project’s sister site, Hinkley Point C.
A contract signing ceremony took place at Sizewell C’s London offices on 30 September, though the value of the contract was not disclosed.
Each of the two turbine halls at Sizewell C will feature:
-
An Arabelle steam turbine with a 75-inch last stage blade
-
A 1.7 GW GIGATOP generator
-
Heat exchangers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment
Each turbine shaftline will measure approximately 70 metres, comprising a high-pressure and intermediate-pressure module, three low-pressure modules, and the generator.
Arabelle Solutions is currently installing the first of two turbine islands at Hinkley Point C in Somerset, where each plant includes two EPR reactors.
“As at Hinkley Point C, the large Arabelle turbine is well suited to the output requirements and site conditions at Sizewell C,” said Cedric Couffignal, Executive VP, New Build at Arabelle Solutions. “Our teams will build on their experience from Hinkley Point C, and to achieve the best performance, the turbine will once again feature a 75-inch last stage blade—the longest ever produced.”
By replicating Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C aims to reduce engineering hours, allowing components to be manufactured early and stored, mitigating project risk and helping maintain the schedule.
“Having worked at Hinkley Point C for many years, I’m delighted that such an experienced company like Arabelle Solutions has secured this contract,” said Nigel Cann, Joint Managing Director of Sizewell C. “Their attention to detail and drive to innovate is second to none. These turbines will ultimately deliver enough low-carbon energy to power up to six million homes.”
Catherine Cornand, CEO of Arabelle Solutions, added:
“We are proud that our world-class turbine island technology for Sizewell C will contribute to delivering low-carbon electricity to millions of UK consumers. Our long-term commitment also includes supporting workforce training and skills to advance the UK’s nuclear ambitions for generations to come.”
EDF completed its acquisition of a portion of GE Vernova’s nuclear conventional islands technology and services, including Arabelle steam turbines, in May 2024. The transaction covered manufacturing of conventional island equipment for new nuclear plants, as well as maintenance and upgrade services for existing plants outside the Americas. The acquisition process was first announced in early 2022 and finalized in November 2022.
Preliminary construction at Sizewell C began in January 2024, with the final investment decision for the plant taken in July 2025.
