Anaergia Advances Biogas Plant Development in South Korea

The Singapore-based subsidiary of Canadian green energy company Anaergia has signed a conditional contract to design and construct a biogas facility on Jeju Island, South Korea.

Announced on 9 June, the agreement is valued at approximately CAD $40 million and includes a CAD $30 million primary contract along with an additional CAD $10 million supplementary agreement. The facility will be developed for New Jeju Bio, which is currently arranging project financing and anticipates reaching financial close by the end of the year.

Once operational, the Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant will process around 54,000 tonnes of organic waste annually—including slaughterhouse waste and wastewater sludge—and convert it into renewable electricity using a combined heat and power (CHP) system.

The energy generated on-site will also support critical plant operations such as pasteurisation, evaporation, digestate drying, and wastewater treatment.

Sae Hyun Cho, CEO of New Jeju Bio, said Anaergia was selected for its “proven ability to deliver integrated, complex solutions,” noting that the scope of the project expanded during the design phase to accommodate a broader range of organic waste streams on the island.

The facility is scheduled to become operational between mid- and late-2027, contingent upon financing. The agreement builds on a Letter of Award signed in September 2024 and reflects a broader mandate to support Jeju’s waste management and energy recovery objectives.

Anaergia CEO Assaf Onn commented, “This project represents an even more significant achievement than previously envisioned. Not only is it a landmark development in a strategic new market, but it also showcases how our integrated suite of technologies offers a proven, comprehensive solution for turning organic waste into renewable energy.”

The Jeju facility will be Anaergia’s first project in South Korea, further strengthening its presence in Asia alongside existing developments in Singapore, China, and India. Globally, Anaergia has delivered high-performance biogas and waste-to-energy facilities across North America and Europe, with a focus on advanced digestion technologies and renewable fuel production.

This project supports Jeju Island’s “Waste-Free 2030” vision, which aims to eliminate landfilling and significantly increase resource recovery and recycling.

South Korea’s biogas initiative is part of its broader national strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Under the 2023 Biogas Act, the country is targeting production of 500 million Nm³ of biogas annually by 2026. Recent policy reforms now allow greater biomethane injection into the national gas grid and promote biogas use as a feedstock for renewable hydrogen—key to reducing national greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and transitioning to 70% carbon-free electricity by 2038.
