Air Liquide has announced plans to design, build, and deliver its first biomethane purification unit in Brazil, located at the Cariacica landfill in Espírito Santo. This site, owned and operated by Environmental Mark, processes half of the state’s waste.
The new facility will transform solid waste into biomethane by processing 2,500 cubic meters of biogas per hour, resulting in a production capacity of 155 GWh/year. This biomethane can then be injected into the natural gas pipeline, providing energy for the local community. The site is expected to be operational in the second half of 2025.
Air Liquide has developed expertise across the entire biomethane value chain, from biogas production to biomethane purification and its subsequent injection into gas networks or its compression/liquefaction, storage, and transport to customers. Caio Mogyca, Director of New Business Models Development – South America, stated, “The opportunity to bring to the local market a technology already consolidated in other countries where the Air Liquide Group is present demonstrates the potential of our solutions for a more sustainable and low carbon future. We want to continue to put our knowledge and experience at the service of this commitment.”
Diogo Ribeiro, Director of Renewable Energy at Grupo Marca, added, “We chose Air Liquide to be our partner in this project for its consolidated experience in developing sustainable solutions that apply to the most diverse business profiles, in addition to sharing the commitment to values such as respect for the environment and the consolidation of the energy transition.”
