AES Indiana, alongside Pike County government officials and community leaders, announced a significant investment of approximately $1.1 billion over the next two years to convert Units 3 and 4 of the Petersburg Generating Station from coal to natural gas, pending approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). The plan also includes two new projects focused on renewable energy, featuring solar power and battery storage.
The Pike County Battery Energy Storage System and the Petersburg Energy Center will add 250 megawatts of solar energy and 180 megawatt-hours of battery storage to AES Indiana’s energy portfolio. These projects are expected to create around 300 jobs during the construction phase and contribute approximately $40 million in taxes and benefits to Pike County over the next 20 years.
“These investments reflect our ongoing commitment to Pike County and our leadership in advancing the energy transition in Indiana while ensuring affordability and reliability for our customers,” said Ken Zagzebski, CEO of AES Indiana. “For more than 50 years, the workforce at Petersburg has powered economic growth across the state, and they will continue to play a crucial role in Indiana’s economic future.”
