Iraq to set up green hydrogen project

The Iraqi Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, revealed  that steps have been taken to establish a green hydrogen project for the South Refineries Company with a capacity of 800 tons annually and a solar energy plant with a capacity of 130 megawatts.

During his participation in the ninth Iraq International Energy Exhibition and Conference (IEE), Abdul-Ghani said that the government has begun the first tender to implement carbon conservation projects to reduce gas flaring in Baghdad’s eastern field, which has a capacity of 12 million cubic feet.

The Iraqi Oil Minister added that a draft law related to renewable energy has been prepared to establish an administrative body that issues the necessary legislation to expedite operations.

Green hydrogen, which is created by electrolyzing water molecules to separate them into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, has a large potential for production in Iraq.

Iraq is rich in solar energy resources, and wind energy projects may be developed there because of its windy regions.

The country’s attempts to lessen its carbon footprint and move toward a low-carbon economy may benefit from the creation of green hydrogen there.
